SELF-CARE IN AGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Self-care is something that has been around for centuries, but in recent years it has been
poorly described and mixed with so many other obsolete things in our lives. You might have seen this first in a self-help book when you were randomly scrolling through the bookstore, trying to find your next read.

How is self-care defined?

Self-care by definition can be defined,
The practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health or The practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress. 'expressing oneself is an essential form ofself-care'
However, by this definition, we have forgotten a few things that have become important with the continued of social media, and indefinite increase of high-stress levels. The forgotten item is compassion for ones-self during a failure. The society around us has made it hard for us to accept failure, we constantly get reminded of our failures which leads to a domino effect of severe depressive state.
Self-care can be divided into many different types:

  • Sensory: Creating a calm state of mind. Living in the present moment is the most effective way of letting some resentment go.
  • Emotional: When it comes to emotion, ensuring that you live with an open-mindedness of accepting your emotions is critical to your self-care.
  • Spiritual: If you aren't religious, this might be something that be in your alley. Spiritual self-care is about believing in a deity. It is about becoming aware and one with your values and morals, also what matters to you.
  • Physical: Your physical health is not just about hitting that cardio machine or some weights in the gym to make you feel that you have done something. It is about letting off steam in the ways that you wouldn't usually.
  • Social: If you consider yourself an introvert or an extrovert, this isn't about doing something for other's sake but choosing to do something with others that make you feel really good. You want to take the reigns of life in your hands.

Top 5 Benefits Of Self Care

Better productivity.

When you learn how to say “no” to things that over-extend you and start making time for things that matter more, you slow life down in a wonderful way. This brings your goals into sharper focus and helps you to concentrate on what you’re doing.

Improved resistance to disease.
There is evidence that most self-care activities activate your parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). What this means is that your body goes into a restful, rejuvenating mode, helping it to fortify its immune system. So, with better self-care often comes fewer colds, cases of flu and upset stomachs.

Enhanced self-esteem.
When you regularly carve out time that’s only about being good to yourself and meeting your own needs, you send a positive message to your subconscious. Specifically, you treat yourself like you matter and have intrinsic value. This can go a long way toward discouraging negative self-talk and your critical inner voice.

Increased self-knowledge.
Practicing self-care requires thinking about what you really love to do. The exercise of figuring out what makes you feel passionate and inspired can help you understand yourself a lot better. Sometimes, this can even spark a change in career or a reprioritization of previously abandoned hobbies.

More to give.
When you’re good to yourself, you might think you’re being selfish. In truth, self-care gives you the resources you need to be compassionate to others as well. Giving compassion is a bit like filling a bucket; you can’t fill someone else’s if you don’t have enough of your own!
